DOKUMENTARFILMABEND

„Ludwigs Absprung“ (dt.) von Karla Sonntag 2016 und „Home without a roof“ (Frz. m. Engl.

Protagonisten:
Ludwig Sasse, 77 Jahre, Rentner, Opa, Hauptprotagonist
Elke Sasse, 75 Jahre, Rentnerin, Oma, Ehefrau des Hauptprotagonisten
Mali Sasse, 21 Jahre, Musik-Studentin, Enkeltochter, Interviewerin

LUDWIG’S FLIGHT

Documentary by Karla Sonntag

Length: 40 min.

Film Summary:

The documentary “Ludwig’s Flight” poses the question: What drives a young person to leave everything behind, to flee from their homeland into the unknown and what is helpful for coping and overcoming the consequences of this decision? We accompany Ludwig Sasse as he reflects on this decisive part of his life. The events begin in 1956, where he leaves the GDR as a 17-year-old all by himself. It continuous at the Reception camp Berlin-Marienfelde and four other camps and culminates in the right of residence in the BRD. Through the questions of the granddaughter Mali (21-year-old music student in Leipzig), the viewer intensely experiences how Ludwig has felt in Sandbostel, the reception center for young unaccompanied refugees from the GDR. But also philosophical questions arise: How did a young person behave politically then and now; the Christian values and what became of them; the love for his later wife Elke, who remained for the time being in the GDR; the group dynamics and the role of the parental home - all this and more is discussed between the 77-year-old grandfather and his granddaughter, who narrates excitingly, questioningly and who illustrates and sets the scene. The documentary highlights not only his individual struggle, but also the tense political situation in divided Germany up until 1967. Through the integration of photo and film material from the memorial sites in Marienfelde and Sandbostel, as well as the museum in the "round corner" in Leipzig (former seat of the district administration for national security), the film incorporates a historical foundation, which is supplemented through family photos of the Sasse family and paintings of Ludwig.

Protagonists:

Ludwig Sasse, 77 years old, pensioner, Grandfather, main protagonist

Elke Sasse, 75 years old, pensioner, Grandmother, wife of the main protagonist

Mali Sasse, 21 years old, studies music, granddaughter, interviewer

HOME WITHOUT A ROOF

Documentary by Lina Murad 2017

Length 30 min.

Ouday, Hiba, and Abdullah are three children who survived the war in Syria and have now come to the Jordanian refugee camp Zaatari. "The Camp of Death" as it is called by its inhabitants. They hide their invisible wounds, the everyday suffering and their recurring nightmares behind a laugh that gives them hope.

"Home without a roof" is a movie that has been done in all serenity and sincerity. We wanted to be completely immersed in the children's world, to be close to them, to hear and understand their dreams and their language. On site, the shoot was carried out by a small team, very mobile and, above all, very dedicated. Our great hope is that this film, which is not just a documentary, will raise awareness: the compromised future of these children is also the future of Syria.

Our heroes ... are the children

The heroes of our film are between 9 and 14 years old: it's the age of the Syrian children who conveyed a message of hope to the world by writing "Liberty" on the walls of their schools in 2011.

ODAY is a little kid who does not know his age. His uncles call him "the old man", even though he is about 9 years old. He does not go to school anymore because he's working to help his family, but his biggest wish would be to have all sorts of toys, if he had a wand: a football, balls, pistols, video games ... "but often Oday has a nightmare: "I see how they strangle me".

He fled with his mother, two little sisters and his grandmother, uncle and family. They all share a tent in which the grandmother planted her garden in small pots: "Yes, I have planted all sorts of flowers. The Syrians, wherever they go, they plant." Odayen's 12-year-old cousin BADER, has dreams to become an engineer: "But ... they threw me out of school."

The ten-year-old HIBA fled from Dera'a with her younger brother Kassem and her pregnant mother, but her father stayed there. When she grows up, she wants to be a lover. Why not a future president of Syria, I asked her? In her dreams, she transforms into a butterfly to escape the great monster

urban_scetch.png

American artist James Chapman will lead our Urban Sketching Workshops. Using pen, pencil, and/or watercolor, participants will work with Chapman using a process of artistic discovery (with a firm belief in the idea that “you can't mess up”). Improvisation and risk inform a whole life and a whole image--and mistakes can even give it zing.

Sketching is a mindful, playful way of experiencing place, slowing us down to pace that makes true encounter of a place possible. Walking and sketching, participants of any skill level will find new edges of growth. Adding a journaling component—free-associations, anchoring words and language—rounds out the urban sketching practice. And from there, participants will discover their “snapshots” transform into personal field-guides anchored in powerful, personal memories.

This workshop can help beginners and advance sketchers hone their skills.

We will ask these questions on a tour of sketching at Berlin’s famous Pergamon Museum.
